Nigerian Society Mining Engineers (NSME) is a volunteer professional organization founded on 24th June, 1989 and incorporated on 23rd March, 1990 to serve its members and the Nigerian minerals industry.

Membership is open to all who satisfy the examination requirement of the Council of the Society (degree or its equivalent in mining and/or mineral processing obtained from institutions accredited as such by relevant accreditation bodies in Nigeria).

Meet Our President

Engr. Dr. Umar Albarka Hassan

Engr. Dr. Umar Albarka Hassan

Engr. Dr. Umar Albarka Hassan, ACSM, FNSME, FNMGS, FNMS, FNAEGE was born in 1964 in Auna, in Magama Local Government Area of Niger State. He holds a B.Eng (Hons) degree in Mineral Process Engineering and an Associateship of Camborne School of Mines (ACSM) from Camborne School of Mines, Cornwall, England, UK; and a Postgraduate Diploma in Management from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi. He received his MSc and PhD degrees in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria.


He is a registered Mineral Process Engineer with the Council of Nigerian Mining Engineers and Geoscientists (COMEG) and Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN). He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Mining Engineers (NSME), Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS), Nigerian Metallurgical Society and Nigerian Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment. He is a Corporate Member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and a Professional Member of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) Inc of America. He has held various Council Positions in several Professional Bodies including the NSME and NMGS where he currently serves as President and Vice President respectively.

BRIEF HISTORY OF NIGERIAN SOCIETY OF MINING ENGINEERS (NSME)

Nigerian Society Mining Engineers (NSME) is a volunteer professional organization founded on 24th June, 1989 and incorporated on 23rd March, 1990 to serve its members and the Nigerian minerals industry. NSME has its secretariat along Barkin Ladi Road in Bukuru, Plateau State, Nigeria and membership of over 900. NSME has continued to evolve over the years to meet the needs of its members and the minerals industry. It has the following objectives:

1. To bring together all mining and mineral processing engineers in Nigeria as members of the Society.
2. To advance the science and practice of engineering in the field of mining and mineral processing.
3. To afford a means for facilitating the acquisition and preservation of the knowledge as it pertains to the professions of mining and mineral processing.
4. To represent its specialist interests and its members in Nigerian Mining & Geosciences Society (NMGS) and other Nigerian related professional/ regulatory bodies where applicable.
5. To represent to any Government the views of the Society on any legislative enactment or proposed legislation or any other subject(s) of concern or interest to the Society in Nigeria.
6. To establish professional relation with international bodies such as Institution of Mining and Metallurgy (IMM) London, Society of Mining Engineers of AIME and other related international professional bodies.
7. To ensure the maintenance of high standard and regulation of professional practices in mining and related industries and ascertain high academic and professional standards in mining and related programmes in institutions of higher learning in Nigeria.
8. To enhance the welfare and ensure the protection of the interest of members of the Society.
